Every year around this time, (when it starts to get warm outside) it hits me that I can’t drink my usual ‘hot’ drinks anymore, (unless I want to sweat). :) For example, today I was craving hot chocolate, but considering that it was 85 degrees out, I knew it was way to hot to drink something warm.  So of course I began thinking about how I could get my chocolate ‘fix’ and thought, why not make my hot chocolate FROZEN!?! I had just got done with a really ’sweaty’ workout, so I made this frozen hot chocolate with a side of zucchini chips for the perfect post-workout dinner!

Now, I have made chocolate protein shakes before, but this was different…It was on a whole different level! It was creamy, dreamy, and a whole lot of hot-chocolaty goodness…In fact, it tasted similar to a Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty! I was thinking the whole time I was eating it (while watching American Idol of course) that I couldn’t wait to share this recipe!!! (Now that’s when you know it’s a good one!) ;)

Ingredients:

  • 1 Packet of Diet Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate (This is necessary, otherwise, you will just have an ordinary ‘chocolate’ shake’, however if you are totally opposed to using diet, you could use 1/2 of a regular hot chocolate packet!)
  • 1/2 Cup cottage cheese
  • 1 Scoop protein powder (I used vanilla, because I had it on hand, but chocolate would be wonderful!)
  • 3-4 Stevia/Splenda packets (or to taste)
  • 1 Tbs cocoa powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ice/Water (to desired consistency, I use about a whole tray of ice and 1/2 cup of water~ or less!)
  • *Optional: Whip cream to garnish!

Method:

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a blender, adding the water last, using just enough to get things moving! (Add more water slowly if needed!)
  2. Press ‘pulse’ to crush the ice, then continue to mix until smooth. When shake is thick and creamy it’s ready! Pour into a large mug or cup!
  3. Squirt some whip cream on top (if desired) and enjoy with a straw or spoon! :)

Enjoy!  Love Katie

I love the idea of frozen hot chocolate! My husband enjoys drinking all of those iced coffee drinks that have a chocolate taste. However, I do not like coffee at all and always tell him I just wish it tasted only like chocolate. Well now I can make this. Thanks for the recipe Katie! :D

I love this recipe! My six year old asks for it all the time for breakfast. I love that I can tell her “yes” and not feel guilty!

Oh my goodness…. I have avoided using cottage cheese because I didn’t think it would taste good – I thought it would have a weird taste. I just tried it this morning ( I was out of Almond milk) – and it was AWESOME! Cottage cheese makes the smoothie taste so delicious and creamy!

This looks delicious! May I ask what kind of blender you use? I’m thinking I need a new one because my wedding-gifted one seems to get upset when I turn it up high enough to actually crush any ice.
PS- This is the 1st recipe I’ve looked at on your site, from the link on your ‘About’ page. Just came over from Maggie’s Blog, and I’m really excited to see what all I can learn about cutting sugar, because I’ve wanted to for years, but don’t love the old artificial sweeteners. Anyway, lookin’ forward to reading more here! Thanks & Happy Weekend : )

@krystal i use a vitamix blender, but a ninja and a kitchen aid are good brands as well!
